Shokudo Japanese Curry Rice @ Taman Paramount, PJ

Shokudo at Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya is our new favourite cafe for Japanese curry rice. Located just few doors away from Awesome Canteen and Prologue MY, Shokudo is more cosy and homey, thanks to its clean, simple interior with a touch of modern charm.

Even though both Prologue and Shokudo serve Japanese food, it is not advisable to compare them together as they are of different concept. While Prologue highlights on Japanese ramen and donburi in Chinese homestyle restaurant settings; Shokudo on the other hand, exudes Japanese canteen-like ambience with more focused food selections – Japanese curry rice, udon and agemono.

Shokudo welcomed us with beautiful Japanese traditional wooden doors that you need to slide to open. Look all closed from the outside, hence we stopped for a moment wondering if the cafe was closed on that day. No, they don’t. Shokudo is in business from 12PM-3PM, 6PM-10PM from Tuesday to Sunday, except Monday.

Semi-self service here. Staffs are all friendly and will guide you through what they have to offer in Shokudo. Write down what you want to eat on the order paper given, hand-over to the counter and pay, food will be served to you (*with smile, and tell you to be careful as dishes are hot =D ) once ready.

Shokudo menu is easy to understand – set or ala-carte or light snack. Everything is reasonably priced below RM20 except for Gyu Yakiniku Curry Rice which is RM20 for ala-carte, RM23 for complete set. Ample of choices to accompany your Japanese Curry Rice, from deep fried item like Tonkatsu, Tori Karaage, Hirekatsu, Ebi Tempura to stir-fried meat such as Buta Niku,  Nyu Niku and simple Omu Yaki Curry Rice. Add only RM3 for ocha, soup, and salad.

Mixed Fry Curry Rice Set RM18

Summerkid had an order of Mixed Fry Curry Rice Set, putting together deep fried Japanese whitting, prawn, sweet potato, and egg plate over a bed of rich, creamy Japanese curry. Served with Japanese rice. Portion is hearty, definitely value for money.

Hirekatsu RM14

Add a portion of Hirekatsu from Shokudo menu Agamono section, and rated it as a satisfying version of  Deep Fried Pork Fillet. Meat is tender, locked with juiciness, further jacketed with breaded layer freshly deep fried to golden brown, crunchy, not oily. Good on its own, better with Tonkatsu sauce and shredded vegetables served along.

Diners who are not into rice can also have noodles like Buta Niku Curry Udon (stir fried sliced pork curry udon), Tori Niku Curry Udon (Stir Fried Sliced Chicken Curry Udon), Yasai Curry Udon (Mixed Vegetables Curry Udon) or udon in clear soup which is more light.

Comments: Friendly service, delicious Japanese curry rice with pocket-friendly price. Shokudo deep fried item is good too, crispy but not oily. Parking is quite OK on weekend afternoon. Highly recommended.
