小娘惹 The Little Nyonya Cuisine @ Pavilion Kuala Lumpur [CLOSED DOWN]

Update as of Dec 2017: The Little Nyonya Cuisine has closed down.

The Little Nyonya Cuisine 小娘惹 opens its door to public at Pavilion Shopping Mall Kuala Lumpur end of last year, drawing throng of crowds to taste out their “authentic” Nyonya cuisine.

Huge crowd with minor queue sometimes, so we assume food from The Little Nyonya Cuisine will be good, or at least, not too bad. Finally tempted to out after passing by several time. Little Nyonya Cuisine is located at Level 1, same floor with Food Republic food court; opposite to Ying Ker Lou Hakka Cuisine, beside famous Korean Fried Chicken Kyochon 1991 and Mercato grocery mart.

Little Nyonya Cuisine established a brightly lit, welcoming interior, putting together colourful shades, patterned floor tiles, wooden floorings, marble tables and charming wooden chairs to reach for a traditional and modern touch.

Their menu is as “colourful” as their shop design. Be ready to discover more than just Nyonya delights as you flip through the menu. Ala-carte Nyonya dishes are mostly on sharing portion, ideal for families and friends meal gathering. Rendang Chicken, Pongteh Chicken, Assam Koh Prawn, Nyonya Fried Fish Fillet, Otak-otak, Sambal Chilli Brinjal are the more common delicacies to indulge in.

What amuse us are the long list of Kyushu Black Japanese ramen, Western Cheese baked rice, Cheese Baked Spaghetti, Chicken Chop, Bratwurst Sausage, Onion Ring, and Tomyam on the menu. Perhaps The Little Nyonya Cuisine aims to cater diners who are not a fan of Nyonya delights too.

Melaka Kapitan Curry Noodles 甲必丹咖喱面 RM9.80

Served in a huge bowl with beautiful red hot broth, the curry noodles looks promising. It is mix of mee hoon and yellow noodle drenched in a bed of curry, topped over with beancurd, chicken, long beans, bean sprouts and deep fried shallots. The gravy itself is rich and creamy, but lack of flavour; spicy but sweet at the same time, denoting a overly thick, complex flavours that make us feel cloying towards the end. Oh-well, not a fan of Kapitan Curry Noodle, we still prefer the simple Nyonya Curry Laksa from Straits Food Company.

Nyonya Curry Chicken Rice 娘惹咖喱雞飯 RM9.80
Curry chicken is decent, heaped with spicy, potato-ish gravy. You can dig into around 4 pieces of chicken, douse the curry with rice, this individual dish should be sufficient for a quick meal. Seafood Nyonya Rice, Rendang Beef with Butter Rice, Sambal Petai Prawn Rice are among the choices you can expect from the single-portion menu.

Chicken Lo Bak 卤肉 RM8.00

Lo Bak is definitely a wrong order that doesn’t live up to our expectation. Filling is not meaty, no contrasting crispiness and chewiness texture that make a proper lor bak taste addictive. And..why is it so unbearable SWEET? Never order this at Little Nyonya Cuisine, but not so sure about the quality for Pie Tee and Popiah.

Melaka Nyonya Cendol RM4.30

We gave Little Nyonya Cuisine a last chance by ordering their Melaka Nyonya Cendol, hoping it will be good. Shaved ice, cendol, red bean, coconut milk, palm sugar, no complains on the ingredients but the taste, again, one word- SWEET. Worst thing is, we are biting into frozen cendol throughout the whole dessert session.

Not a place for memorable Nyonya cuisine, but being a restaurant inside KL city shopping mall, Little Nyonya Cuisine has its own advantages – reasonably priced food that can easily attract customers who are looking for pocket-friendly dining place to dine in.
