Restoran 168 Curry Mee and Wantan Mee @ Pudu KL

Still looking for the best wantan mee in KL & PJ that suites our palates. We’ve been hearing a lot about Restoran 168 at Pudu KL, which is famous for wantan mee and curry mee. Most reviews about their curry mee are positive, but for wantan mee, there’re mixed comments on it so we decided to check out on our own.

Located along Jalan Brunei Utara Pudu KL, the shop is an easily spotted corner shop, thanks to their huge shop sign in bold red colour, written with 168 燒腊面傢(粥飯)/ Restoran Wantan Mee, Curry Mee, Bubur and Nasi. If you were here for curry mee, be early or be ready to get disappointed, as happened to us. We reached around 11AM and curry mee was sold out.

So we settled down for Restoran 168 wantan mee that is equally popular. Almost every table has one or two bowls of this, and we realized they have “chou men” (thick wantan noodles) too. We went for the usual version, medium size at RM6.20.

Our wantan mee arrived in a promising presentation, decent portion of thin noodles coated with dark colour-sauce, topped with char siew slices in lean and fat meats, green vegetables and sprinkled with deep fried shallots. Sadly, it wasn’t as good as its look. The noodles was fine, but the sauce wasn’t up to our liking. Very oily with unpleasant stickiness, lingered with alkaline taste, lacked of the savoury and flavours of sauce a wantan mee needs to have.

Being a wantan mee lovers, it was a rare scene that Summerkid failed to finish his wantan mee. The wantan, which proudly claimed as 生蝦云吞 (wanton wrapped with prawns) was below expectations too. We managed to munch on whole prawns enveloped within the silky smooth skin, but there wasn’t any enjoyable bouncy, fresh textures of prawns. What replaced is rubbery hard bites. The only worth-mentioned thing would be the char siew. Not exceptionally good, but fares better than char siew in many wantan mee stalls.

Order four pieces of sui kow priced at RM1.20 per piece. Pretty reasonable as the sui kow was huge, generously filled with minced meat, black fungus, chopped water chesnuts, etc.. Tastewise, OK. We saw trays of “yong liu” (釀料/yong tau fu/ stuffed fish paste) at the food preparing counter. Perhaps we’ll try out next time with our curry mee.

In short, not coming back again to Restoran 168 for their wantan mee. Not recommended at all. Will visit earlier in future to savour a bowl of delicious curry mee heaped with coconuty rich, spicy flavours.
