Cafe 55 Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur (New Cafe Near Petaling Street)

Cafe 55 Jalan Sultan Kuala Lumpur, the latest addition to the cafe list for Petaling Street area, along with Bubble Bee Cafe and Urban Artisan Ice Cream. Convenient location, can be reached by public transport, as it is just 5-10 minutes walk from Pasar Seni MRT station.

The name Cafe 55 can very much associated to the shop address, Lot 55. Guess it is is opened by the enthusiastic team behind Mingle Hostels too, as there’s a corner lined up with breakfast buffet exclusively for Mingle residents during our visit.

Cafe 55 showcases similarity with Leaf & Co Cafe on the interior – raw and rustic touch, bricks and wooden elements, adorned with heritage beauty of the century-old building. Like brother and sister, next to each other. But food wise, proudly stands on their own speciality, churning out dishes highlighting on Asian-Western fusion.

Cafe55 menu covers a lovely selection of food including Bircher Muesli, Praan, Pumpkin & Quinoa Salad, The Stir Fried Yam Cakes, Tom Yam Salmon, Croque Monsieur, Banana Leaf Rice Platter, Lamb Shank, Burger & Mash, Shakshuka, and Harissa Lambn Meatball with Yogurt and cucumber, just to name a few.

For just RM10, you get to try out their 62 °C Hainan Breakfast. It is like the telur goyang we always have in kopitiam or mamak stall, but Cafe 55 presents it with modern twist. Double poached egg, placed on top of toasted bread sandwiched with homemade kaya and butter. Finished with shoyu dressing and scallion.

Simple, but we do love how Cafe55 re-creates the dish in a different way, showcasing the charm of Malaysian favourite Kaya Butter toast with Western poached-egg-on-toast style.

We aren’t a fan of big breakfast but for no reason Summergirl was so in the mood for big breakfast that morning, so we ordered. Turned out it wasn’t a very wise choice.

The Big Breakfast was not bad, putting together jumbo chickecn & cheese sausage, raosted field mushroom, confit tomatoes, homemade yoghurt with granola, poached egg with shoyu and pandan butter toast.

Wholesome platter, but probably a little more greens would make it better. Kaya & Butter toast was served instead of commonly used sourdough or multi-grain bread. A nice idea, great way of introducing Malaysian local breakfast to tourists who visited Cafe55.

Coffee wise, there’s room of improvement. Suggest to go for other beverage range like Milo Dinasoue,  Forest Fruites and more.

Overall, a nice, Instagram-worthy cafe. Hainanese Toast with Poached Egg is recommended.
