Original Cake 源味本舖現烤蛋糕, famous old-fashion egg sponge cake from Tamshui, Taiwan (臺灣淡水) has opened in Sunway Velocity Cheras, the newest shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur.
Established in 2011, Original Cake specializes in sponge cake highlighting on what called as Khor Char Bi 古早味, which means the good old traditional taste. Classic in look, with the most essential ingredients for cake – flour, milk, egg, sugar. Nothing fancy but the owner has actually failed many times before successfully get the best ratio for such as simple, but delicious cake we have today.
The brand now has 4 branches, 1 in Shihlin and 3 in Tamshui, Taipei. Really glad to see it in Malaysia now. Currently, Original Cake Sunway Velocity menu only have fresh baked egg cake in n Original and Cheese flavours, price at RM18 and RM25 respectively. Other flavours such as Spurted Chocolate Flavour, Healthy Dried Longan Flavour, Banana Milk Flavour, Cranberry Flavour, Almond and Nuts Flavour will be launched in near future.
This new shop on 3rd floor of Sunway Velocity has clearly, drawn attention from cake lovers near and far. The store opening hours is from 10AM to 10PM but when we arrived around 9.50AM last Sunday, there was already more than 20 customers eagerly awaiting for their cake.
We were the first 30 customers there but waited for more than an hour for our cake. Original Cake kitchen has 6 oven and from what we observed, each oven can fit in 2 trays of batter at a time. To ensure the quality, each tray is carefully taken care of.
Throughout the one hour we were there, there’s only one tray coming out from the oven at one time, gone empty in a jiffy of course. So we had to wait for another batch to come out. This may be the reason why waiting time is long but is definitely well-worth.
So happy when we finally bought our egg sponge cake. Opened up and had a piece immediately. So soft, so pillow fluff, not too sweet with pleasing taste of milk and egg! The true Khor Char Bi that reminds us about those handmade egg cake grandma used to bake for us during childhood time.
The cheese version is even better! Slices of square cheddar cheese imported from New Zealand, sandwiched within the batter, sprinkled with more cheese powder on top and put into bake.
Have it while it is hot so that you can enjoy the melting sensation from cheese, flavouring the spongy cake with cheesy saltiness. Just nice and not overwhelmed.
We are not too sure how long the queue will stay, so be patient if you need to be in the line for an hour or two.
