Although the Five Elements concept is intrinsically complex and abstract, it is flexible enough to apply to nearly every aspect of life. For Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur’s Executive Chef Olivier Pistre, it is in French cuisine.

From 18 September until 24 November, expect a unique and interactive dining experience at Lafite consisting of lavish starters, mains and desserts curated based on the idea of Five Elements. Five Elements is available Mondays to Fridays during lunch, from 12noon to 2.30pm and dinner from 7pm- 10.30pm (dinner available on Saturdays).

Five Elements consist of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water and are believed to be the fundamental elements of the interactions that occur in the universe. Revolving around the concept of mutual growth and mutual inhibition, the elements keep each other in check, creating a harmonious balance of force.

While Water helps Wood to grow and Wood fuels Fire, Fire melts Metal and Water extinguishes Fire. In the world of cuisine, ingredients can be artfully paired to achieve a harmony of tastes and body energies. The Metal element is often associated with warm comforting food and the property of dryness, giving it the ability to counteract cold and wet weather with their dying and cold-dispersing properties.

Using the Five Elements concept as inspiration, Chef Olivier curated a menu that brings new energy to Lafite. “The cuisine is based on fresh, top quality produce prepared in a traditional fashion but drawing on the latest techniques. I want to create an imaginary type of dish to provide a sensitive, generous and fully emotional dining experience,” says Chef Olivier.

The starters, main course and desserts each have five elemental categories, giving guests plenty of options to choose from.
