Retro Kitchen @ SS2 (Invited Review)

Retro Kitchen, a small restaurant in SS2, Petaling Jaya has been serving authentic Asian fusion and Italian cuisine in a comfy environment, and handling catering plus various types of functions. Located right above 7-11 with a bright red and yellow shop board, it is easy to be seen and easy to be missed at the same time. Though the shop may look a little shabby from the outside, who knows, surprise was waiting for us upstairs.

Stepping up the narrow staircase till the end, we were welcomed with a homey retro scene, just as the shop named. Lots of posters featuring stars from 50’s and 60’s such as Bob Marley and The Who, movies posters like West Side Story and The Sting, and pieces of vinyl records filled almost every corner of the shop. Pots, radios, irons used in olden days were also seen lining up gracefully in the cabinet. Magnificent. I wondered how the lady owner get to collect such a great number of olden days irons.

Mushroom Bruschetta – 5 pieces (RM8.90)
slice of crusty baguette served with mixed mushroom and brown sauce.

Bruschetta in Retro Kitchen was very big in portion, as the thickly sliced baguette was seen to be piled high with sauté mushroom and really creamy brown sauce. Served hot, the baguette was still crispy and chewy, making it to win some points over other bruschettas. Small eater like my girl would easily get full by having just the bruschetta.

Classic Chicken Chop (RM13)
Marinated butter flied chicken, pan fried till golden brown. Served with homemade mushroom sauce, fries and coleslaw.

The meat was tender and juicy, but somehow lack in taste. Adding the homemade mushroom sauce balanced up the overall taste, as it was rich and flavorful.

New Zealand Lamb Chop (RM22)
Selection of lamb shoulder from New Zealand, pan fried and baked till tender. Served with homemade lamb sauce, mashed potatoes and sauté mix vegetables.

We tried out two choices of meat, one was well-done and another was 70% cooked. I preferred the later as it was more tender and juicier, while another one, though well-done, wasn’t dry and hard at all.

Lamb Shank (RM28)
Braised till tender and soft, served with mix vegetable and mashed potatoes.

The meat was meltingly tender, easily fall from bone, and full of flavor from the long simmering. A little gamey, but not overwhelmed. Good value for the big portion. One let down would be the mashed potatoes, as it was too soft and almost becoming part of the sauce.

Chicken Parmigiana (RM18)
Chicken fillets breaded and deep fried, topped with tomato sauce, ham gratin of cheese, comes with fries and coleslaw.

This would be my favourite dish in the meal. At first I thought it was pizza dough base, but it surprised me as I tucked in one piece, it was deep fried beaded chicken! Though deep fried chicken and heavy cheese topping came together in the recipe, it wasn’t oily and not cloying at all. Very recommended dish.

Mixed Mushroom Spaghetti With Basil Leaves and Olive Oil.

Loving pasta in any types, but we always avoid pasta cooked in Aglio Olio style as we were afraid with the oiliness infused though olive oil was used. But Retro Kitchen seemed to have a good handling over the amount of olive oil used in this pasta. Every strand of spaghetti was lightly coated with olive oil, just right and not too much, making the whole dish simple, healthy, filling and delicious.

Linguine Duck with Mushroom, Coriander and Chilli Paddy (RM18)

Another lovely pasta with mushroom, but this one was added with duck meat and duck skin to level up the flavor. Chilli paddy gave a hint of spiciness and drizzles of crispy fried shallot made the dish turned a little Western and Asian fusion. Nonetheless, it was tasty, al dente.

Retro’s Special Lamb Fried Rice (RM11)

For those who prefer rice, Retro’s Special Lamb Rice would be a top notch choice. Different from the usual fried rice, Retro’s version fried rice was cooked with pieces of lamb, capsicum, vege and chilli, and sided with pan fried egg and papadum, very Indian style. Full flavored? Of course!

Retro’s Trio Pizza (RM16)
Thin pizza with button mushrooms, shitake mushrooms and oyster mushroom with three types of cheese.

Three types of mushroom with three types of cheese generously loaded in a pizza with the price of RM16? What a steal. Though reasonably priced, the thin crust pizza was sinfully delicious with the thick layer of cheese topping.

Sweet Trio Special
Mini dessert of Tiramisu, Walnut Brownies and Lime Crumble.

New in the menu, this set of dessert was at first served during the Valentine’s. Due to the great feedback, Retro Kitchen had planned to include this into the dessert menu, to fullfill the crave of sweet tooth, allowing customer to test out three types of dessert at the same time.
Retro Kitchen, though being small, their vintage decorations and arts were good enough to bring you back to the priceless days of 50’s and 60’s, while enjoying a great variety of comfort food. A nice place that shouldn’t be missed.
