Sanuki Udon @ Taman Bukit Desa

Some good food places are meant to be spread by word of mouth, as they are either hidden in hard-to-come-across places, or you just won’t pass by it. Same goes to this hidden gem – Sanuki Udon, a restaurant hidden within a quiet residential area in Taman Bukit Desa. If not because of recommendations by bloggers, we would never get to know about this place.

As its name, Sanuki Udon serves only udon, udon that is freshy made everyday by the restaurant’s owner, Seiji Fukimoto. Business was at brisk when we paid a visit there one weekend. Menu were simple, choices were narrowed down and so we done with our orders in a jiffy.

Curry Udon (RM7.00)

The boy went for the curry udon, which turned to be a right choice. Creamy and mild in spiciness, the curry gravy was brimming with carrots, onions and minced meat, generously topped on the fat, firm, fresh and slurpy noodles. The add on soft boiled egg was perfectly done, with warm runny egg yolk proudly revealed itself upon a light poke. Portion was not huge, but good enough to avoid food wastage.

Cha Cheong Noodles (RM7.00)

While the curry udon was good, the girl’s order, dry cha cheong style udon was not the boy’s cup of tea. But the girl liked it. It tasted different from the Korean or Chinese Cha Cheong noodles which usually come in dark brown colour and intense savoury sauce. Instead, the sauce gathered the taste of fermented bean curd paste, rich, creamy and unique in its own way.

Other than noodles, we ordered a few kushiage items too – Ebi tempura, shitak mushroom, quail eggs, and cheese sausage. Breaded, deep fried and served pipping hot, every stick of kushiage was crispy and fresh, but we started to feel greasy towards the ends. But they are good company to beer. Not to forget, the dipping sauce was delicious. We asked for refill three times!

Other than the decently made fresh udon, another reason that makes Sanuki Udon at Taman Bukit Desa worth a visit will be their price. Every udon choice is below RM10, and each topping is priced within RM1 to RM3. Side dishes are reasonably priced too, which is only RM2 per stick. Definitely a must visit place that offers you satisfying meal with more than reasonable price that is hardly come across these days.
