Nyonya Roots, an authentic Nyonya Restaurant that is tucked away inside 3K sports Complex and Inn in Subang. Hidden, but worth discovered. With the owner hails from Penang Nyonya, knows everything about Nyonya delicacies, learns Nyonya recipes from mum, Nyonya Roots doesn’t need luxury nor fancy decorations to parcel up themselves, as the arrays of mouth watering Nyonya cuisines are enough to speak for them. We went on a Nyonya feast there last Tuesday there, and glad to say that we were satisfied with most of the dishes.

Curry Fish Head (RM30.90-Medium / RM44.90-Large)
8 of us, we had the table full with dishes, more than half on the spicy side. Clueless where to start from, we made a first move on the biggest portion dish that night- Curry Fish Head. We took a spoonful of the red orangish, thick and robust flavour curry, and felt grateful that the spiciness was at a level which was easily accepted by public. Groupa fish, lady fingers, and tau pok had all absorbed the flavour of curry, oozing with gravy in every bite.

Sambal Prawns with Petail (RM26.90-Medium / RM34.90-Large)
We continued to spice up the tastebud with Sambal Prawns and Petai. Again, these fresh and plumpy prawns cooked with the well loved classic condiment was spicy in flavour, rich in colour. For those who like sambal but afraid of stinky beans, no worries as the sauce wasn’t infused much with the taste of beans. and No doubt, it went extremely well with rice.

Otak-Otak (RM4.90)
Wrapped in banana leaves, the Otak-otak settled beautifully inside with extra soft and creamy texture, mild in spiciness.

Pai Tee (RM9.90–Medium / RM14.90–Large)
IMG_4512e
Pai Tee, the last time we had this was in Penang. Never failed to like this crispy hat shape case pocketed with sengkuang, carrots, cucumber, deep fried shallots. Chunkful of textures. Added a few dallops of the spicy sourish chilli sauce, appetizing.

Chicken Kapitan (RM12.90–Small / RM20.90–Medium / RM26.90–Large)
The spiciness was milder comparing to the Fish Head Curry, but the thick, rich, and aramatic gravy made us had another reason to tucked into another bowlful of rice.

Perut Ikan (RM13.90-Medium / RM21.90–Large)
Fish stomach, sounded so unappetizing but tasted appetizing. Boiled with herbs and vegetables, the whole dish set on sourish flavour, chewy texture. Something new to us, but hard to gain like on.

Jeu Hoo Char (RM12.90–Medium / RM18.90–Large)
The girl was so happy to see this on the table that night. Her late grandma used to cook this whenever there was any special occasions, and she liked to wrap it with popiah skin. It was a simple dish, with shredded jicama, carrots, mushrooms and dried cuttlefish stirred fried together. Nothing special, just that flavours that remind us on the taste of home is always the best.

4 Angle Bean Kerabu (RM14.90)
Move on to the 4 Angle Bean Kerabu that didn’t look appealing but somehow tasted good, crunchy and peanuty. It might not be likened by everyone, as it promoted raw vegetable taste.

Inchi Kabin (RM12.90-Small / RM20.90-Medium / RM26.90-Large)
Inchi Kabin, the Nyonya Peranakan style deep fried chicken that was marinated with coconut milk and deep fried twice. The end results was marvellous with fragrance, non-oily, dry body meat. Not the juicy type but still great in tenderness, went well with plum sauce. For once, we loved this more than the finger licking good fried chicken from some infamous fast food chains.

Assam Fish
Distinct sourishness was one of the keys for good assam fish, but a good balance with the spiciness was important too. Nyonya Roots did this well, with fresh meaty Grouper fish.
In fact after having so many spicy dishes, we were delightful to find that each and every of them tasted so homey, so delicious, and by just having only one of any of the dishes with gravy, you can easily gobbled down bowls of rice. Good place to try out.
