Mentioning about egg tart, it is always a hit and miss as different persons judge their favourite egg tart differently. Some like to have thin crust, some like to have thick and crumbly crust, some like to have dense and eggy filling while some like them light and subtle. We did some research on famous egg tarts before going to Hong Kong, and managed to try out only one, which is Tai Cheong Bakery egg tart. No comparison, so we will review base on our personal tastebud.
The eldest Tai Cheong Bakery is located along Lyndhurst Terrace (擺花街), just a stone throw away from Lan Fong Yuen. This bakery has been in Central for more than half century, baking fresh buns, pastry and tarts daily. Now, they have more than 20 retails in Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories.
Tai Cheong Bakery is crowned with the glory of “Hong Kong Best Egg Tart”, hence trying out their egg tart is a must. We bought two egg tarts, priced at Hk5 each. Their pastry wasn’t the flaky type, but buttery and crumbly- the shortbread style. Nestled within was light, velvety smooth egg filling. We took a deep bite and enjoy mouthful of buttery, creamy and custardy goodness. Too bad we were not having the fresh from the oven, pipping hot batch, else it would be perfect.
Beautifully packaged biscuit and cookies in colourful boxes, ideal as gifts.
Apart from the famous egg tart, fresh buns and cakes from Tai Cheong Bakery are also favourite of locals, as they will drop by and get a loaf or two before leaving for office or school.
Handmade cookies in mini jars.
Asking if we loved Tai Cheong Bakery, we choose to remain neutral. We still prefer flaky pastry with beautiful layers, but at the same time we do adore the velvety smooth, melt in the mouth egg custard from Tai Cheong Bakery.
