Soi 19 Thai Steamboat and BBQ @ Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya

We discovered Soi 19 Thai Steamboat at Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya last weekend, a great restaurant for authentic Thai street food, Moo Kata and Jim Jum. It is located at the same row with Khuntai Thai Restaurant PJ, near to popular cafe for coffee, Caffeinated Cabin too.

Moo Kata, or Moo Kratha, is a type of Thai steamboat that has a pan sitting on charcoal fire, and you can grill or boil your steamboat ingredients on the pan. Jim Jum is called as streetside hot pot, where a claypot will be placed over charcoal fire, and diners can dip (jim) or drop (jum) steamboat ingredient into the claypot.

Soi 19 offers 5 type of Thai Steamboat Set, which is Pork Mix Set- Sliced pork 300g, pork sirloin 150g, liver 150g (RM23); Chicken Set- chicken 400g (RM23); Seafood Mixed Set – prawn 5 pcs, squid 200g, mussels 5 pcs (RM38); Chicken & Seafood Mix Set – Chicken 300g, prawn 5 pcs, squid 100g (RM38); Combo Mix Set- Chicken 300g, Pork 200g, Prawn-5pcs, Squid 100g (RM58).

If you visited Soi 19 Thai Restaurant in a group of 4, we suggest diners to begin with Combo Mix Set and add on whatever you love from the add-ons menu.

Additional items are all reasonably priced. Among the choices include Pork Slice 150g (RM6), chicken slice 200g (RM8), Squid 100g (RM8), King Oyster Mushroom (RM5), Mussels 5pcs (RM8), Pork Sirloin 150g (RM8), Rice Noodle (RM2).

Remember to order some rice noodle (glass noodle/ Tang Hoon) and cook it by the end of the meal. It feels so great to slurp in strands of glass noodles that are thin, real smooth, deeply absorbed with flavourful soup which has gathered intense sweetness of meat and seafood.

For Jim Jum, Soi 19 provides four types of set. Pork Mix Set (RM23), Chicken Set (RM23), CHicken & Seafood Mix Set (RM38) and Combo Mix Set (RM48). We prefer Jim Jum over Moo Kata, as it brings out different authentic Thai dining experience that is hardly find elsewhere in KL. However, for diners who wish to have both steamboat and grilling fun, Moo Kata is still the best.

Apart from Thai Steamboat and BBQ, Soi 19 also churns out delicious side dishes prepared by chef from Thailand. Selections aren’t extensive but for those we have tried out, we found them noteworthy.
Goes well with a pint of beer too.

Soi 19 Special Soup (RM18)
Soi 19 Special Soup is actually Tom Yam Talay. The Tom Yum Soup is firely hot and tongue numbing for sure, but less pronounced in sourness. Laid with liberal amount of ingredients including enorki mushroom, prawns, mussels and squid.

Green Apple Salad (RM22)
An unexpected dish which eventually turns out to be Summergirl favourite. Young Papaya Salad or Mango Salad that are commonly found in Thai Restaurant, but not this Green Apple Salad. Arrive in hearty portion, generously piled with cubed onions, green apple, cashew nuts, toasted peanuts, raisins, cabbage, carrot, prawns, the salad delivers a heap of textures and flavours. We love the complex concoction of juiciness, crunchiness, nuttiness with spiciness, sourness and onion’s piquancy.

Soi 19 Kangkung Special RM8
Do not leave Soi 19 without trying their Kangkung Special. Not a usual stir-fried kangkung, but battered kangkung deep fried into golden brown, tempura-like. Super crunchy and not oily at all! Highly recommended.

Thai Grill Pork
Thai Grill Pork is one of the memorable street food we had back in Thailand. It taste pretty similar to our local satay, grilled with bigger chunks of meat. Chewy and tender, a light touch of smokiness, flavour added with a coat of sticky sweet sauce at the outer layer.

So far, we are satisfied with food served in Soi 19 Thai Restaurant. It makes us feel close to the authentic Thai street food, especially Jim Jum. Do leave rooms for their dessert of Tab Tim Krob, Mun Chum or Tar Go too.
