Foon Xiang Steam Fish 歡香蒸魚頭 @ Ring Road, Jalan Gelang Pudu KL

Had lunch at Foon Xiang Steamfish Restaurant, Jalan Gelang Pudu KL last Sunday, a place we never thought of venturing into. Thanks to Summerkid’s family for bringing us there, now we discovered another place for cheap steam fish in KL with humble, friendly service.

Though named as restaurant, the location of Foon Xiang is more like a neighbourhood food court, with no obvious shop sign. You can call the place as Ring Road Restaurant (玲律茶餐室) or Xin Tian Di Restaurant (新天地茶餐室). There are few stalls running steamed fish business in the kopitiam, together with other quick meal choices such as chicken rice, fish head noodles, Hong Kong truck noodles, etc..

Skip all of them, as we were told that the best is situated at the end corner of the kopitiam, which is Foon Xiang Steam Fish Restaurant 歡香蒸魚頭小廚. It is diagonally behind the stall selling Hong Kong Noodles. Apart from steam fish, Foon Xiang serves delicious Dai Chao (大炒) and Sai Chao (小炒) too, including Singapore Fried Bee Hoon, Stir Fried Vegetable, Braised Meat, Homemade Beancurd, just to name a few. Pretty much similar to the offerings you can have in a normal Chinese restaurant, at a cheaper price. But the place can be extra hot and stuffy during lunch hour, so be ready to bear with the heat, sweat dripping off your forehead.

Singapore Fried Bee Hoon RM7

We began with a plate of Singapore Fried Bee Hoon at Foon Xiang Steamfish. Not exactly packed with “wok hei” but we like the pronounced tang of tomato sauce that liven up the entire flavours of the mee hoon. Managed to trace small chunks of siu yoke that adds more aroma.

Deep Fried Homemade Beancurd RM12

Our favourite and the must-order in Foon Xiang. In fact, we both agreed that their deep fried bean curd tastes better than the one we had back in Lau Heong Seafood Restaurant Sentul. Chewy and juicy at the inside, jacketed with crispy, pipping hot golden outer layer.

Sambal Belacan Sweet Potato Leaves RM10

Sweet potato leaves stir-fried with sambal belacan, or more known as Fan Xu Miu Ma Lai Zhan , falls on sweeter side, moderate in spiciness. Better if the vegetable could be coated with more robust red-hued belacan paste.

Braised Meat with Yam/ Kau Yoke RM15

Surprisingly, Foon Xiang Steamed Fish serves Kao Yoke too, decent but Summergirl’s mum makes better version. The braised pork belly showcases a balanced layers of fat and lean meat, mellow soft, deeply infused with flavours of sauce. Furthered sectioned with moist and starchy yam.

Pork Trotters RM12

Pork trotters, or Zhu Geok Chou is served in a claypot, with gravy still bubbling as it landed on our table. Looks promising but is way too sweet for our liking. Albeit fragrant, it is rather mild in sourness. Reaching the fifth course, we started to feel that Foon Xiang loves adding sugar into all their dishes.

Fish Head RM25

Highlights in Foon Xiang Steamfish. A meal in a steam fish restaurant is incomplete without ordering a plate of steam fish.  Fish is fresh, dressed in a bed of light soy sauce, generously garnished with deep fried chopped garlic. Found it rather overcooked for this time, leading to rather mushy texture of the fish. But still fine overall.

Total bill come to ~RM85 including 3 rice. Will visit again mostly only in the evening for diner because the scorching hot weather during lunch hour is really unbearable. It makes us lose all the appetite before start eating. We prefer to enjoy our steam fish and deep fried bean curd next time in a more windy condition. =.=|||
