Tiffin’s by Chef Korn @ Mid Valley KL : Thai Food in Tiffin

Tiffin’s by Chef Korn has been around Mid Valley Megamall KL for nearly one year, humbly serving delicious Thai food that promises to please. We’ve heard a lot about Tiffin’s but after failing to trace down their location for few times, we gave up. Finally found it last week, and regret for the lack of determination to check it out earlier. Tiffin’s by Chef Korn has truly awesome, comfort Thai delicacies! Hope we are not too late to introduce huh?

Where is Tiffin’s by Chef Korn? It is at North Court, 3rd floor, near to Old Town White coffee, right beside 2nd floor of Daiso (opposite side of Mid Valley cinema). For easier reach, we go into Daiso shop, take their escalator and at the exit, turn right. The restaurant will be in front of you.

Spacious corner lot, appears with industrial-like interior – raw, grey cement walls with floorings of same tone, ceiling shade lamps, accompanied by bold colour furniture and customized wall shelve brimming with colourful tiffins in different sizes.  These containers remind us the good old days where mum always pack us school lunch box in tiffin. No longer see this much nowadays, when plastic and polystyrene containers start taking over. In case you wish to enjoy the reminiscence, visit Tiffin’s by Chef Korn for the arrays.

Fire Balls RM17.80
For food, instead of having an extensive list of Thai selection like many of the restaurants, Tiffin’s by Chef Korn menu focuses more on special favourites from Northern to Southern of Thailand. You may not see Thai Fish Cake, Mieng Kam, Lime Juice and Chilli Sauce Steamed Fish, but their not-so-common Fire Balls with Ground Roasted Rice, Salted Wings, Grilled Pork Neck, Isan Balls, Shrimp Paste Fried Rice, Sour Curry with Crispy Pork Belly and more will surely entice your tastebud.

Grilled Pork Neck RM23.80
We love this. Grilled marinated pork neck, loaded with texture, excess fattiness trimmed. Take a slice, add a dollop of homemade sauce and a spoonful of steamed glutinous rice, rolled all together and pop into the mouth. Call it the Thai-version Korean BBQ meat wrap that taste as good.

Beef Ball Noodles RM25.80
Beef ball noodles, one of the crowd favourites in Tiffin’s by Chef Korn. Slippery smooth Thai rice noodles immersed in a bowl of dark brown colour broth, topped with bouncy beef balls, poach beef, Australian tender shin meat. Huge portion, sufficient to share between two small eaters. Get them in set so that your noodles are complete with Chef Korn’s daily appetizers and Fresh Thai-based salad.

Diners can choose to enjoy the broth at its original flavours, which are more soothing, nourishing, packed with meat sweetness; or add with chilli flakes, vinegar, fish sauce and sugar served along. This additional condiments do change the base, but this is how Thais enjoy their Beef Ball Noodles. Begin with small amount and go for more if you liked your noodles this way.

Green Curry Pork RM25.80 (RM23.80/chicken, RM28.80/seafood)
We get hooked with Tiffin’s by Chef Korn ‘s Green Curry at the first sip of the gravy. The curry itself is the clear winner, not because of it goes well with white rice, but because of the great balance in each flavour – aromatic spices, rich creaminess, mild spiciness, all blend in just right. Thanks to the effort of Tiffin’s kitchen team who prepares green curry from scratch, on daily basis. The freshness tells, it is not from pre-packed paste.

Stewed Pork Knuckle RM28.80
Tender pork knuckle dressed in a bed of stewed sauce, further topped with kailan, hard boiled egg and home made preserved vegetable. While the meat was decent, we felt the gravy a bit light, fell short of flavours in the beginning. Despite so, as we savoured slowly, we gradually gain liking over it.  Real comfort home-cooked style, you can have it continuously and not feeling greasy nor cloying till the end of the meal.

Signature Classic Tom Yum Seafood RM22.80 (chicken/RM19.80, Combo /RM25.80)

Clear soup tom yum, heaped with generous amount of squid, prawns, abalone mushroom. Chopped cilantro, fresh lime and chilli are served separately, hence diners can adjust the level of sourness and spiciness according to their liking. For us, we drop everything into the soup, and reach for a medium spiciness tom yum. In case you need more chilli, just ask from the staff.

Stir Fried Kailan with Garlic RM16.80

Thai Milk Tea RM7.80
Tiffin’s by Chef Korn Thai Milk Tea has been fine tuned to suit locals palate, more similar to our Teh Tarik. Amount of  crushed ice and sugar are greatly reduced, but equally milky and filled with Thai tea goodness. A bit selfish, for we hope to receive a milk tea with more ice, not for any reason, just to fill our longing till we visit Thailand again. Hehe.

Tom Yum Mojito RM9.80

Thai Black Lemon Tea RM8.80
Thai Black Lemon Tea is interesting – A glass of cold black tea, syrup and lemon juice filled in lab test tubs. Not exactly in match with Tiffin’s by Chef Korn Thai cuisine concept, but the short moments of mixing these liquids together are fun though.

In short, Tiffin’s by Chef Korn may have disadvantages for residing in the more quiet, hidden side of Mid Valley with less foot traffic. But this restaurant definitely worth the walking, and some hide-and-seek to reach if you want some Thai food cooked with home recipes. Among the dishes we have tried, Green Curry is high recommended.
