Streat Thai @ The School, Jaya One PJ: Thai Street Eats

Streat Thai in The School, Jaya One looks promising from its restaurant appearance. Thoughtful design that represents charms of Thailand, spacious dining area that can accommodate over 100 persons at one time; and kitchen that replicates the scene of food stalls in Thailand selling different street food. Plus, with the busy crowd they had within a working offices area on public holiday, we guess Thai food here wouldn’t be too bad huh?

We walked in without second thought, flipping through Streat Thai menu that covers a long list of individual and sharing dishes, sufficient for lunch and dinner. Each item is reasonably price, where a bowl of Thai Papaya Salad costs you at only RM6.90, Fried Chicken Wings at RM8.90, RM12.50 for Seafood Tom Yum Soup and Pad Thai at RM10.90, just to name a few.

Grilled Chicken Skewers RM8.90

Streat Thai is a pork-free Thai restaurant, hence no trace of Moo Ping but replaced by similar chicken version – Grilled Chicken Skewers. It turned out more like Japanese Teriyaki Chicken to us, and we couldn’t taste the special sweet layer that Thai Grilled Pork Meat has. Other appetizer options include BBQ Chicken Wings, BBQ Beef Striploin, Fish Cake, Fried Squid, Fried Chicken Wings, and Crispy Fried Chicken Chop.

Red Curry Chicken Noodles RM9.90

Decided to have Red Curry Chicken Noodles instead of usual Pad Thai, seeing that it has “thumbs up” icon, which means high recommended by Streat Thai. Mentioned as “medium spicy” on menu, but was quite mild to our palate.  Broth was beautiful in its orange red colour, rich in coconut milk, well-absorbed by thick vermicilli for best flavours.

Tom Yum Fried Rice with Prawns RM12.50

Summerkid’s Tom Yum Fried Rice with Prawns was not up to his liking. And so he said: 感覺沒有靈魂 (The rice seems to to have no soul). It was lacked in flavours, we couldn’t get the kick and aroma of tom yum in the rice. We both agreed that Quan Coffee House in Desa Pandan does a better job in serving a nice tom yum fried rice.

Thai Iced Tea RM5.90

Streat Thai serves less sweetened version of Thai Iced Tea, just half the sweetness compared to we had in Thailand. Thai Milk Tea, Salak Fruit Milk Tea, Green Tea Milk Tea, Butterfly Pea Ice Tea, Pandan & Lemongrass Tea are some of the beverage on their menu too.

In short, despite the affordable price for authentic Thai street food, we personally feel that Streat Thai still has rooms of improvement for their dishes. Service is friendly but can be short-handed during peak lunch hours.
