Jia Li Mian Shi Guan Penang Curry Mee @ Pandan Jaya KL

Jia Li Mian Shi Guan 家里面食舘檳城咖喱面 at Pandan Jaya KL – by far one of the best Penang curry mee in Klang Valley. We accidentally discovered this place when Summergirl’s relative, who has been staying oversea for years came back to Malaysia for a short trip, and asked us where to have nice curry mee on Saturday morning. It was 9.30AM that time and we need to leave the house by 11.30AM, so that we could have enough time to send him to bus station, then catch up a medical appointment by 12.30noon. The nearest place we could think of is Pandan Indah and Pandan Jaya. Skipped food court because we already knew that they tasted bad. Went around the area and passed by Jia Li Mian Shi Gua. Coincidently, curry noodles is their signature. So happy that we Dapau few packets home and oh man, we got really really surprise with the delicious taste.

It is so noteworthy that we decided to return one week later to take some proper pictures, and cover a review for Jia Li Mian Shi Guan. Well, good thing is meant to be shared. And to be honest, it is a really rare case that we visit the same restaurant or cafe in two consecutive weeks. Almost zero possibility. But Jia Li Mian Shi Guan takes the lead, thanks to their awesome Penang curry mee. LOL.

Penang Curry Mee RM6.50

Food menu on Jia Li Mian Shi Guan is pretty straightforward. Four types of noodles – The must-try Penang curry mee, Penang Assam Laksa, Tom Yum Noodles and Fish Ball Noodle (dry/soup). Available in size of small (RM6.50) and big (RM7.50). For normal eaters, small is more than enough. For snacks, check out Lobak (RM3.00), Otak-Otak (RM4.00), Toasted Bread with Kaya & Buter (RM1.60) and Half Boiled Egg.

At the price of RM6.50, we would say that Jia Li Mian Shi Guan Penang curry mee is value for price. Good portion of noodles, immersed in beautiful orange colour curry broth, topped with generous amount of coagulated pig blood, jiu hu, prawns, tau pok, bean sprouts, cockles, and mint leaves. Look at the ingredients, you know this is pretty an authentic version of Penang curry mee. You don’t find coagulated pig blood and jiu hu in your curry mee all the time right???

Apart from the authenticity, what makes this bowl of curry mee scores high is the broth. It is so aromatic, filled with flavours of herbs and spices in pleasing amount, something that many curry noodles broth lack of nowadays. Medium spiciness, not overwhelmed with coconut milk nor curry paste. They added a spoonful of curry paste for you by the side. So in case you need more kick, just toss all into your soup.

Penang Assam Laksa RM6.50

Summergirl had a bowl of Penang Assam Laksa. Choose small size but was considered quite big for her, and could barely finish half. Glad that it was equally great as the curry mee. A good balance of sourness and spiciness, topped with julienne cucumber, onions, pineapple and a slice of fish to complete.

Otak-Otak RM4.00

Judging from the quality, we guess Jia Li Mian Shi Guan has either hired a sifu from the island, or they have actually in the business for quite some time. It is definitely not an easy task to churn out such a good bowl of curry noodles, with such a pleasing depth for the broth. Had a short talk with one of the staffs there when paying our bill, and we were told that the family has actually running curry mee business back in Penang for over 10 years (at Lebuh Keng Kwee near to Penang Road Cendol). They then opened in Sang Kee Restaurant Taman Maluri KL last year, and moved to Pandan Jaya 2 months ago with the name Jia Li Mian Shi Guan.

In short, a highly recommended restaurant for comfort bowl of Penang curry mee and assam laksa. Price is cheap considering the amount of ingredients given, very dei sek. Service is friendly with smiles. We are planning to visit for the third time already, bringing Summerkid’s family together because his mum loves curry mee a lot! We are sure that she will like Jia Li Mian Shi Guan version!
