Poppo Kanteen @ Sri Petaling KL: Nasi Lemak from Johor Canteen

July 26, 2016 by summerkid_summergirl

Poppo Kanteen Sri Petaling KL, a cafe that replicates the environment of school canteen with modern charm, listing down over hundreds of local and fusion delicacies on their menu, everything at affordable price.

Poppo Kanteen Sri Petaling KL

Before opening Poppo Canteen, the team used to run a canteen business in one of the secondary schools in Batu Pahat, Johor. Their nasi lemak, prepared by Poppo, is well-loved by students, teachers and even parents. Praises from school crowd and persistent to keep the best original flavours of nasi lemak has led us to where they are today – Poppo Kanteen.

Poppo Kanteen Sri Petaling KL

Poppo Kanteen has two outlets currently, one in Taman Segar Cheras KL and another in Sri Petaling KL.  We were at AA Pharmacy Sri Petaling last week and decided to lunch at Poppo Canteen, seeing that it received good reviews from some blogs. Out of the topic side note: For those who want to purchase health products and vitamins, AA Pharmacy is a good place to get these items at cheaper price.

Business was at brisk when we walked in at about 11.30AM. No one attended us so we took the menu on our own from the counter. Had to look out for one of the staffs when we were ready to order, only they handed over ordering paper to us. Is OK. Maybe short handed.

Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah RM8.90

Poppo Kanteen menu is extensive, covering from best seller nasi lemak in different varieties ( nasi lemak with Beef rendang / Ayam masak kicap / oxtail rendang / chicken curry /chicken rendang / mutton curry / beer stomach rendang) to light bites with fusion twist such as serunding cheese toast, roti boom ice cream, garlic bread telur; Western delights like Chicken Chop, Fish & Chips, Spaghetti; local favourites including Mee Siam, Nasi Goreng, Tom Yum Soup, Ayam Goreng Kunyit, Nasi Briyani and Mee Goreng Kampug, just to name a few. Price is reasonable, a meal with drinks cost between RM15- RM20 per pax.

Food arrived within 15 minutes. Signature Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah is considered small in portion, especially the rice, ikan bilis and peanuts given.  But since we are getting this at only RM8.90 in a eatery with cafe-style ambience, we do not want to comment much. Or maybe, they want remain the idea of “canteen serving size during recess time”, which is not too heavy, but good enough to keep the tummy from feeling hungry till afternoon. Anyway, taste wise, their rice lives up to its hashtag of #nasisolemak. Very aromatic and coconut milk flavours laden, better than many nasi lemak out there. Ayam goreng berempah is decent, crispy skin, but could do better with deeper marination.

Poppo Kanteen Sri Petaling KL strawberry cheese toast

Strawberry Cheese Toast RM4.90

While the toast scores with thick layer of melted cheese on top of crispy toast, the strawberry jam spread in between is too thin to get a show here. We felt like eating plain toast with cheese. Maybe Tuna Cheese Toast or Kaya Cheese Toast will be a better option.

Poppo Kanteen Sri Petaling KL poppo cendol

Poppo Cendol RM4.90

Many says that Poppo Canteen Cendol is a must order but sadly, it didn’t impress us. The shaved ice itself is coarse, though pronounced with the taste of gula Melaka but a tad overwhelmed to us. Toppings of sweet corns, cendol and red beans are generous though. We still prefer cendol at Straits Food Company Bangsar more.

Poppo Kanteen Sri Petaling KL teh kahwin

Teh Kahwin RM3.90

We appreciate the effort of Poppo Kanteen in having more than just normal White Coffee and Teh Tarik for customers by adding interesting elements into this two drinks. Teh Tarik Halia, Teh Tarik Float, Teh Tarik with Egg, Teh Tarik Butter, White Coffee Cincau, Poppo Coffee Lava, check them out.

Overall review: Poppo Kanteen is worth visit for normal lunch and dinner without hurting your wallet. But for similar price, we will go to Village Park Nasi Lemak instead, if nasi lemak was what you are looking for. For better ambience but higher price nasi lemak, Wondermama is recommended. Despite so, the concept of canteen food that spans over 200 choices in Poppo Canteen, deserves loud applause.
