The Fat Bee by Backlane Coffee @ The Jetty, Melaka

July 16, 2016 by summerkid_summergirl

The Fat Bee Cafe by Backlane Coffee at The Jetty ( Behind Holiday Inn Hotel Melaka ), our new favourite cafe in Melaka, photography-worthy at all corners.

Prior to our visit to Padang Pasir Klebang Melaka and Pantai Klebang Melaka, we continued our Melaka half day trip journey with lunch at The Fat Bee. It took us some time to locate the place, as it is quite hidden, with nice but not so obvious shopfront. For those who are not familiar with Melaka town, suggest to input The Jetty in navigation tool instead of The Fat Bee. We had tried out few options of location tracked in both Google Map, Waze and through Instagram by choosing “The Fat Bee”, but ended up in the middle of the road. #facepalm

Look out for Holiday Inn Hotel, after the hotel, behind it there is a building. Look carefully and you will see a small signboard of The Fat Bee. We first visited their sister cafe Backlane Coffee in Jonker Street, and was glad that The Fat Bee is opened at a more quaint, quiet area with ample of parking during daytime.

Cozy interior, but thoughtfully designed, a lot more beautiful from what we expect. The Fat Bee cafe seating shows inviting modern charm – From round table with marble top that can sit up to 10 pax, to low coffee table with wooden chairs in black colour cushion and floral backdrop, high tables near to window for quiet coffee, or comfy seats near to windows, each with their own design of sofas in different colours. We especially love the flooring made up from mini hexagon floor tiles, and dessert & coffee counter that sum up to a photogenic scene.

Food wise, The Fat Bee Melaka menu spans over an extensive selection, from interesting appetizer like Soft Shell Crab Pau to Prawn Cake Salad; Pasta such as Squid Ink Pasta; Pizza with interesting flavours of Green Rendang Chicken (RM21), Duck & Apple Pizza (RM23) a mix of Asian rice and noodles dishes including Vietnamese Beef Noodles (RM16), Nasi Lemak, (RM16), Local Curry Noodles (RM16); Western selection like Braised Lamb Shank (RM35), Grilled Salmon (RM25) and Sze Chuan Spicy BBQ delights. Not exactly cheap in price, but a meal in The Fat Bee with drinks should be below RM40 per pax with careful order.

Finally settled down for Smoked Duck Aglio Olio, Japanese Curry Rice, though we were also eye-ing on Green Rendang Chicken Pizza, Beer Batter Onion Ring, Truffle Mushroom Cream Pasta, Thai Chicken Krapow and Wok Fried Ribbon Noodle.  Coffee is a must for Summergirl. Weather is hot so Summerkid get himself Iced Dark Chocolate 70%.

Smoked Duck Aglio Olio RM23

Spicy but could do better with the flavours, as the olive oil didn’t seem to bring out the aroma of dried chilli and chopped garlic. A little more kick the aglio olio will taste good. Noodles, no complains as it is freshly made in house daily, the chews, the freshness definitely scores.

Japanese Curry Rice RM15

Normal white rice is used instead of Japanese rice, which lower down the satisfaction of eating a plate of Japanese Curry Rice. Thanks that it was Japanese curry rice, we could have the thick, flavourful and mild in spiciness gravy to douse with normal rice. Chicken katsu was alright. Crispy at the outer layer but for the chicken meat, it was a bit hard and dry to our liking.

Latte RM11

Drink menu covers from espresso-based drink like latte, cappuccino, americano to English Breakfast, Camomile, Peppermint, Aple Chai , Pomogranate tea for hot…

..and more refreshing drinks to beat the hot weather – juices, honey drink and chocolate.

Overall review: We love the interior in The Fat Bee. Coffee is good, Ice Dark Chocolate was not too bad also. For food, selections are great, so it shouldn’t be a problem to cater different taste bud. Just, with room of improvements for taste.
