Canton Kitchen 老招牌 @ Glo Damansara, Kuala Lumpur

Canton Kitchen Restaurant ventures into Glo Damansara KL this year, celebrating milestones for their F&B business which is almost 3 decades old. Back in 1988, Canton Kitchen started humbly at the bottom of the hill of Genting in Bukit Tinggi Pahang, serving patrons with home delicacies using raw ingredients, which mostly produced from their small farm.

Good food is spread by word of mouth. Canton Kitchen was then expanded to have another branch in Pahang, followed by Sri Rampai, Sri Gombak, Selayang, Happy Garden and now, for the first time, in a shopping mall. A restaurant that has designs tinged with reminiscence, replicating some of the scenes in olden days within modern, stylish setting.

Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Ball 金瓜番薯蛋 RM9.90

IMG_3792

Canton Kitchen menu covers plenty of familiar homecooked and “dai chou” dishes, complete with few innovative choices such as Pumpkin Spring Rolls, Thai Style Fried Fish Cake and Meatball with Salted Egg Yolk. Spotted our childhood favourite – Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Ball on their appetizer section and immediately placed an order. Bite size, perfect round like ping pong ball, freshly deep fried to result in crispy outside, chewy soft inside texture.

Canton Kitchen

Steamed Tilapia Fish with Assam Paste 南洋亞參金鳳魚 RM35.90

Followed by ala-carte dishes for proper meal. For first timer, it is alright to get recommendation from staff. They are very friendly, and suggested us few of the must-try food by considering total diners and preference. For fish dishes, go for Steamed Tilapia Fish with Assam Paste, or Steamed Tilapia Fish with Ginger Paste.

Canton Kitchen

Steamed Mihun with Ginger Wine Chicken 姜酒菜園雞蒸米粉 RM22.90

Steamd Mihun with Ginger Wine Chicken used to be a not-for-sell-dish, and eaten only by the family. Requests began flowing in after customers seeing them eating this, and it ended up becoming permanent, top seller item on the menu. Mihun soak up with flavours of ginger wine soup definitely steals the limelight, accompanied by tender chunks of kampung chicken.

Canton Kitchen

Signature Homemade Beancurd 楓林豆腐RM18.90

Homemade beancurd filled with “fat choi” (發菜), deep fried and dressed with generous minced meat and chopped long beans.

Canton Kitchen

French Beans with Dried Shrimp 蝦米富貴豆 RM15.90

Despite the growing business, the owner still keeps to their farm-to-table concept. Most vegetables served in Canton Kitchen are supplied directly from their own farm daily, freshness ensured. An effort that the team prides at.

Canton Kitchen

Kampung Chicken in Guang Xi Style 廣西菜園雞 RM24.90

Meat dishes can go from Steamed Kampung Chicken with Sesame Oil & Ginger, Steamed Kampung Chicken with Ginger Paste, Steamed Kampung Chicken with Wolfberry, Kampung Chicken Soup with Chinese Wine, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Onion Chicken Chop, Barbecue Pork Ribs, Braised Pork Ribs, just to name a few. All seems tempting.

Canton Kitchen

Guang Xi Style Braised Pork with Mantou 廣西扣肉 RM22.90

Canton Kitchen

Glad that our order of Guang Xi Style Braised Pork with Mantou was good. Pork belly was braised till soft, deeply flavoured with fu yu sauce. It may be too salty for some due to the gravy base. So have it with rice to balance up the flavours, it will be satisfying. Comfort food that almost akin to the “Kao You” Summergirl’s mum prepares at home.

Canton Kitchen

Steamed River Prawn 清蒸河蝦 RM69.90

Steamed river prawn with wine, topped with shredded ginger. You may realize they incorporate ginger in many of the dishes. This is because they uses Bentong ginger, the state’s speciality that Canton Kitchen introduce to diners, getting them to savour one of the highest quality ginger produce in Malaysia.
