Nam Heong Pavilion Elite KL: Taste of Ipoh White Coffee 怡保南香白咖啡

April 28, 2017 by summerkid_summergirl

Nam Heong Pavilion Elite, Kuala Lumpur  怡保南香白咖啡 is finally opened! Bringing over the concept of Nam Heong Food Court in SoHo Ipoh, Nam Heong Pavilion strives to offer some of the best street food delicacies that the town prides at, and not to forget, their very own original white coffee to KL folks. For those who feel that Nam Heong Da:Men Subang and Nam Heong Starling Mall Damansara Uptown are too far for you, now there’s one in KL city centre!

The establishment, which has made a better name for herself through Old Town White Coffee – the famous coffee chains that are blooming across the country, making “appearance” at almost every mall and business buildings.

So what makes Nam Heong different from Old Town White Coffee, seeing that they both have good white coffee (*ya obviously) and signature Ipoh Gei Si Hor Fun taking the lead? The easiest would be the former is non-halal, while the latter is pork-free. Food selection wise, Nam Heong menu carries more Chinese-oriented food like dim sum, char siew rice, chicken rice, Ipoh Yong Tau Foo Noodles that you won’t find in Old Town White Coffee menu. Whatever reason it is, the two has caught the attention of crowds in different ages, from young to old, coming together to savour the best of Ipoh flavour in a modern dining restaurant blended with vintage ambience.

Our “kepoh-ness” brought us over to Nam Heong last week. So happened they were having RM2 promotion on their signature items – Char Siew Rice, Chicken Rice, Prawn Mee, Dry Curry Noodle, Ipoh Gei Si Hor Fun and more. Queue were very long especially during lunch and dinner hours. We waited for like an hour before reaching our turn. Finally seated down and ordered 3 items from their advance POS system using iPad. A great move to minimize man-made error, and fasten the whole ordering process but not the serving time (*because we waited 50minutes for our prawn mee to arrive).

Nam Heong Chicken Hor Fun RM11.90

Generous amount of Hor Fun immersed in semi-cloudly broth, topped with chives, shreded chicken and prawns. Soup was OK, and Summerkid said the “Gei Si” (chicken) was on point, good.

Signature BBQ Char Siew Rice RM12.50

This is delicious, beyond our expection. Thick cut of char siew in balanced lean and fat layer, shielded with glossy, caramelized edges that delivers pleasing burnt aroma and honey sweetness. Butter rice, fragrant, filled with moisture. If we were to come back to Nam Heong again, rice base dish would probably be our top pick.

Supreme Prawn Mee RM13.50

The long awaited prawn mee. Sadly, the taste wasn’t up to our liking. The soup smells great but as we savoured, the depth wasn’t there, lacking in prawn sweetness. Added in chilli paste served aside to have more “oomph” and flavours, still, mediocre.

Nam Heong Ipoh White Coffee RM4.40/hot, RM4.80/cold
Overall, we love the dining environment that exudes comfortable olden charms. Service still have rooms of improvement while for food taste, is a hits and misses. Plus points for their POS system that are relatively easy and fun to use at. There are even choices of vermicelli, mix of vermicelli and yellow noodles, hor fun, vermicelli and hor fun to choose for your noodles while for drink, there are even less ice less sugar options. Not bad huh?

Planning to re-visit for their dim sum, particularly the ever popular egg tart! We saw the price for one egg tart is RM3.40! Quite expensive. Hopefully it will give us a nice, satisfying old-school beautiful flavour. Other dim sum choices in Nam Heong include Siew Mai, Spare Ribs with Black Bean Sauce, Malai Kuih, Signature Chicken Sou, Crispy Prawn Dumpling, Fried Raddish Cake, Chicken Glutinous Rice, and more.
