This Christmas, The Gardens Mall Promotes English Literacy Amongst Youth

This Christmas, The Gardens Mall celebrates the season of giving by supporting English literacy amongst Malaysian youth. The mall pledges to donate up to RM10,000 to Teach For Malaysia, the independent, not-for-profit organisation that provides education to marginalised communities. To further underscore The Gardens Mall’s dedication to youth literacy, the mall’s Christmas décor is inspired by the imagery found in children’s fables and fairy tales.

The Gardens Mall will fulfil its pledge with the help of its shoppers. The mall will host a book drive, inviting shoppers to donate their English books at the Teach For Malaysia booth in the North Palm area on the ground floor. Donors will get to sign a pledge card valued between RM50 and RM500 that will go towards Teach For Malaysia.

Dzameer Dzulkifli, co-founder and managing director of the education-based NGO shared, “National studies show 53% of Malaysian youths could not meet the minimum international English reading proficiency tests. We thank The Gardens Mall for the continued partnership, and support in our work to empower even more Malaysian students with the skills they need to thrive in school and beyond – including important language and literacy skills. Every donation counts!”

Antony Barragry, CEO of The Gardens Mall said shoppers will not only get to donate books and support a charitable cause but enjoy their holiday shopping in an enchanting environment as well.

“As the busiest time of the year approaches, we would like to take this opportunity to not only reminisce the fables we used to read as children, but also to reflect on the troubling issue of youth illiteracy. We hope you will join us in making the most of the season’s yuletide cheer and support our drive to help Teach For Malaysia”, Barragry said.

Shoppers may expect scheduled performances that are meant for the whole family including performances from a musical trio called “The Christmas Three” to the telling of the “The Nutcracker” story. “Fairy Tales”, a live illustration session, gives shoppers the opportunity to take home personalised illustrations of themselves as fairies with an illustrator. Last but not least, “Flight of the Fairies” offers shoppers selfie opportunities with ‘real-life’ fairies.

In the spirit of giving, The Gardens Mall will also reward its shoppers who spend RM800 (RM700 for Standard Chartered credit cardholders and The Gardens Club members) and above in a single receipt* at any of its specialty stores with a woodland gift box, that includes a potted plant and an organic handmade soap.
