Bunn Choon, Kwai Chai Hong: Must-try Egg Tart near Petaling Street

February 10, 2020 by summerkid_summergirl

Other than the ever-crowded Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam 何九海南茶店, Bunn Choon Restaurant 品泉餅傢 is another breakfast spot that is worth discovered in Jalan Panggung /Lorong Panggung (Kwai Chai Hong) area – not exactly for the food, but the nostalgic, charming vintage vibes.

Bunn Choon egg tart

Throughout the years, Bunn Choon has made its name for having one of the best egg tart in KL, prepared using traditional recipe passed down since their establishment in 1893. If you love egg tart in layers of flaky base, this will definitely be your to-go choice. The shop is initially located same row with Ho Kow, but has now moved and re-opened as a restaurant, right next to the entrance of Kwai Chai Hong. Just a short walk, less than 5 minutes from MRT Pasar Seni in case you wish to travel by public transport.

Bunn Choon menu aren’t extensive, covering a variety of dim sum like Char Siew Pau, Siew Mai, Deep Fried Spring Roll, Thai Sauce Pheonix Feet, Steamed Pork Ribs, Loh Mai Gei, Deep Fried Taro, Peanut Sesame Ball, Cheese Bean Curd Roll, etc; as well as noodle/rice bowls including Homemade Rice Mee Sua, Hakka Braised Pork Rice, Chicken Scallion Oil White Rice, and Mince Pork Dry Noodle with Turnip. Price from ~RM5.

Saw this ” Bak Kut Teh Siu Mai” so we thought it was interesting and ordered one. Ended up it looked nothing like “Siew Mai”, but more like tau fu pok stuffed with fish paste filling, then immersed in bak kut teh soup. Don’t bother to order this.

Other food ordered: Steamed Fish Ball, Steamed Pork Ribs, Sichuan Dumpling and Cheese Bean Curd Roll. Not bad, but you can easily get better dim sum out there.

Bunn Choon egg tart

Egg tart is the best among all, available in two flavours – charcoal egg tart and original egg tart.

For next round, we will only dapao Bunn Choon Egg Tart and other freshly baked pastry such as pineapple tart, pei dan sou, char siew sou. They also have a kiosk in REX KL, near to Petaling Street.
