If you are looking for one of the best steaks in Kuala Lumpur, look no further to Maillard Grill at Damansara Heights – one of the very first steakhouses in Malaysia that serves premium meat aged in butter for over 30 days, while celebrating robust flavours in a modern flair.
Another noteworthy part is, Maillard’s kitchen’s grill is entirely powered by charcoal, using wood and charcoal from Perak – an effort of supporting locals. It is also proudly quipped with an imported Spanish full-cast-iron Mibrasa oven which weighs half a tonne – able to retain heat as high as 450 degree Celsius, allowed food to cooked to its natural flavours whilst bringing out unique taste.
The decor of Maillard Grill leans toward warm palette with the use of striking textural accents, presenting a sleek, modern design which has a wider appeal than usual steakhouses in Malaysia. We love the al-fresco area adorned with green plants, creating a backyard garden like space for laid-back, relax dining. The name Maillard is inspired from the term “Maillard reaction” – a chemical reaction between amino acids in proteins and sugars when food is heated. Browning process occurred, at the same time adding distinctive aromas and flavours to different dishes.

The staff will move a “Steak Board” around to customer’s table, showing the cuts available on that day, together with the portion size (how many grams) and pricing. Some items like Tomahawk are very limited. It was sold by 8PM during our visit.
Apart from steak, Maillard Grill menu also offer an array of carefully crafted delicacies that will set to entice your tastebuds. This include Wagyu Beef Tartare, Lobster Bisque, Cameron Heirloom Tomato, Two Colour Cabbage, Roasted Cauliflower, Burnt Leek, Grilled Asparagus, Grilled Watermelon Steak, Aubergine Croquettes for the Starter section; Ipoh Spring Chicken, Pappardelle Al Ragu, Sabah King Prawn Arrabbiata, Fish & Chips, Lobster Wellington, Beef Wellington, Barley Risotto, Seasonal Vegetables Pappardelle for mains.
We ordered Grilled Watermelon Steak out of curiosity and it turned out unexpectedly good. Such a matching flavours for juicy sweetness of watermelon with smoky char-grilled notes. Better when enjoyed with Mozzarella, Herlooom Tomato, Pesto. Highly recommended.
Glad to tick off another “Beef Wellington to Try in KL” from our list. Mallard Grill’s Beef Wellington is lovely. Puffy pastry enveloping tender meat, flavours elevated with truffle Duxelle and Truffle Au Jus. Served with Grilled Seasoal Vegetables. P/S: 30 minutes waiting is required for this order.
Accompany your meal with sides like Cameron Shishito, Onion Rings, Creamed Baby Spinach, Sauteed Baby Spinach, Triple Cooked Fries, Baby King Mushrooms, Mashed Potao, Mac & Cheese, Tri-Colored Corn, Grilled Seasonal Vegetables, Cauliflower & Broccoli Gratin. Our personal favorite is Triple Cooked Fries. This special fries painstakingly goes through three-stage of preparing process. It is first simmered, sous-vide then deep fried to golden brown to create a crispy outside, fluffy within texture. So addictive.
End the meal sweet with Banana Log, burnt cheese cake or Red Cherry.
Already planning to return and check out more of their dishes, such as Aubergine Croquettes, Lobster Wellington and Barley Risotto. Great wine, great steak, great ambience – an evening dinner could not be better than this.
