Scrappy Dough Sg Besi: Cafe in a Scrappy Building

Scrappy Dough in a scrappy building (not quite)

There’s been some buzz this week in XHS and IG about a new bagel spot tucked away in Sungai Besi, and we are so curious to check it out for ourselves. It goes by the name Scrappy Dough – though you wouldn’t know that right away.

Reason being, there’s no signage, no bold shopfront, no clear branding in sight. Instead, what’s become its unexpected calling card are bagels hanging by the steel balcony railings and two bright orange safety cones placed right in front of the staircase that leads to the shop. Somehow, these odd little details have become its visual identity.

Even Waze didn’t get us to the exact location. We had to make a few wrong turns from the main road, navigating through narrow lanes and back alleys before finally spotting the safety cone. Luckily, we arrived early and managed to snag a parking spot nearby.

The space looks almost abandoned at first glance, but once inside, it feels like it was curated to look that way-intentionally raw, intentionally minimal. Beyond just exposed bricks and cement walls, scrappy building-style. Seems-random-but-actually-not details, making the whole space feel thought-out without trying too hard.

For food, Scrappy Dough menu focuses on sourdough based fresh bake – sourdough bagel (of course), sourdough bread, sourdough sandwich, sourdough focaccia. You have have your choice of Lemon Cream Cheese, Blueberry Cream Cheese, Kombu Truffle Butter as spread.

While we prefer our bagel basic always, smothered with cream cheese,  they only had Kam. Heong bagels during our visit. Was told that classic bagels are available in an hour or so. Not much other choices so we picked focaccia instead, alongside hojicha and latte. They were okay, nothing particularly memorable in terms of flavor- but the space itself made the trip worthwhile.

One more thing: when you arrive and see the seats by the counter fully taken,  don’t worry. There is a lot more seating tucked away at the back of the cafe. Just walk through, and you’ll find it.
