Malam Gala Malaysiaku: The P. Ramlee Premier at The St. Regis KL This Merdeka and Malaysia Day

August 24, 2026 by summerkid_summergirl

“Malam ini… sebuah cerita bermula.” This Merdeka and Malaysia Day season, The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur invites guests to experience the enduring cinematic legacy of Tan Sri P. Ramlee through Malam Gala Malaysiaku: The P. Ramlee Premiere at The Brasserie—a one-of-a-kind guided dining experience where film, gastronomy, live music, storytelling and surprise unfold together around the table. Rather than recreating the familiar world of P. Ramlee’s films, the evening takes a different vantage point: not the story on screen, but the experience around it, transforming The Brasserie into an elegant premiere setting where beloved cinematic moments are reimagined through contemporary gastronomy and brought to life around the table.

FROM SCREEN TO TABLE

At the heart of the experience, each course takes the name of an iconic P. Ramlee film and draws inspiration from a memorable scene within it. Before each course is served, guests watch a carefully selected clip from the corresponding film. As the scene concludes, the story moves from screen to table, where the Pencerita guides guests through a specially created “Stage Direction.”

The cue may invite guests to recite a familiar phrase, make a choice, follow an instruction or uncover something unexpected. Only then is the next culinary chapter revealed. The result is a distinctive rhythm: Watch. Listen. Follow the cue. Discover the reveal. Dine.

Pendekar Bujang Lapok

From Laksamana Do Re Mi, where guests are invited to recite “Zam… Zam… Ala Kazam!”, to Pendekar Bujang Lapok, where a choice among six boxes determines what comes next, each course transforms a familiar cinematic moment into an interactive encounter. In Nujum Pak Belalang, hidden elements are uncovered before the theatrical reveal, while Musang Berjanggut closes the journey with a keepsake to carry home. Every course therefore carries more than a dish. It carries a scene, a story and a surprise.

THE PENCERITA: THE VOICE THAT GUIDES THE EVENING

Threading the evening together is the Pencerita, who guides guests from one Babak to the next.More than an emcee, the Pencerita serves as the evening’s storyteller—setting the scene, introducing each film moment, delivering the “Stage Directions” and building anticipation before each culinary reveal.

The experience is deliberately guided, allowing guests to discover the evening one chapter at a time rather than simply moving through a conventional sequence of courses. The table becomes the stage. Each course becomes a new chapter.

THE CULINARY INTERPRETATION

Leading the culinary interpretation is Mohd Sakhawi Azizi, Executive Sous Chef of The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur, who translates the spirit of P. Ramlee’s films into an elevated gastronomic experience created for The Brasserie.

Nujum Pak Belalang

Each creation takes its inspiration from a specific cinematic moment, character, object or scene, creating a connection between what guests have just witnessed on screen and what arrives before them at the table. The intention is not to reproduce the food of the films, but to reinterpret their memorable moments through contemporary gastronomy—allowing the story to continue through taste, texture, presentation and surprise.

Laksamana Do Re Mi 1

Across seven courses, the menu moves from a shared opening to a private finale. The evening begins with Laksamana Do Re Mi: a trio presented together on a woven mat, pairing Tualang honey-roasted quail and pomelo chutney with a bright young-mango kerabu and Haji Ali’s crispy beef lung.

Masam Masam Manis

Familiar teatime and kampung flavors are reworked with fine-dining technique—the beloved curry puff of Masam Masam Manis reimagined as smoked chicken karipap with confit potato, curried espuma and curry-leaf powder—before the menu builds to Musang Berjanggut, a coral lobster in torch-ginger sambal over fragrant nasi lemuni, and closes with the pumpkin-and-gula apong sweetness of Nasib Labu dan Labi.

A SOUNDTRACK FOR THE EVENING

Music carries the experience throughout the night, with live musicians performing a selection of P. Ramlee’s beloved repertoire, including songs featured in his films alongside other popular and enduring works from his musical legacy.

Pencerita of the night

The music creates a continuous thread between the screen and the room, allowing the evening to move naturally between film, performance, storytelling and dining.

AN ENCOUNTER WITH P. RAMLEE’S LEGACY

Adding a tangible connection to the man behind the films is a curated display of original artefacts and archival materials, complemented by faithfully produced replicas, presented in collaboration with the P. Ramlee Memorial House and Arkib Negara Malaysia.

Musang Berjanggut

Guests will encounter selected items connected to P. Ramlee’s life and career, including his trophy, Pingat Ahli Mangku Negara (A.M.N.), films, books and other archival materials.
The A.M.N. was conferred upon P. Ramlee in 1962 in recognition of his significant contribution to Malaysian film and entertainment.

Together, the collection offers another vantage point into P. Ramlee’s legacy—not only the films audiences remember, but the man, artist and filmmaker behind them. The experience was developed in consultation with the P. Ramlee Memorial House and Arkib Negara Malaysia, ensuring that its celebratory, interactive format honors his legacy with care and authenticity.

MALAYSIA REMEMBERS

The connection to Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day is deeply rooted in the shared cultural memory that P. Ramlee represents. His films, songs, characters and humour have travelled across generations and backgrounds, becoming familiar reference points in Malaysian life. Decades after his passing, his work continues to be watched, quoted, sung and rediscovered.

This makes P. Ramlee a natural cultural figure through which to celebrate Malaysiaku—a Malaysia that is shared, remembered and experienced differently by every generation.

The evening therefore celebrates more than a collection of films. It celebrates the enduring cultural connection that P. Ramlee’s work continues to create among Malaysians.
