Alison Soup House TTDI KL: Pet Friendly Cafe, Soup that Warms the Soul

August 17, 2017 by summerkid_summergirl

Alison Soup House, a pet friendly restaurant in TTDI Kuala Lumpur that serves lovely homecooked food and Chinese soup boiled for 15 hours – a reason that is enough to make us give this place a visit.

The shop is situated above G Ekspres, just next to Guardian pharmacy and McDonald’s TTDI. Or, same row with familiar cafes like Dotty’s, Pickle & Figs, and newly added Fluff KL, in case you still can’t figure out the exact location.

“20 fresh ingredients, 15 hours of cooking, 0 MSG” – the framed tagline adorning the walls as we walked up staircases leading to Alison Soup House certainly makes us feel more anticipated with our lunch later.

“Fluffy” oo-so-adorable dog wagging his tail as we walked in, followed by warmth welcome from staffs. Moderately decorated interior with a mix of white, wood and dark theme. Not towards hipster cafe style but very cozy and comfortable, like dining at home.

As the name implies, Alison Soup House focuses mainly on Chinese soup with modern Western twist. Some of them are soup we grown up drinking with like Honey Date ABC Soup, White Pepper Pork soup, 7 Treasure Herbal Soup, Red Dates Shitake Mushroom Chicken, Yellow Wine Ginger Chicken Soup and Seaweed Chicken Tofu Soup. Few of the selections are quite new to us, like Spicy Drunken Pork Soup, Puck Manis Minced Pork Soup, Pumpkin Enoki Mushroom Soup.

Price range for the soup is RM17.90 to RM23.90, served with multigrain rice, brown rice bee hoon or mee sua. Picked Honey Date ABC Soup because Summerkid never fails to like this, while Summergirl was so happy to find 7 Treasure Herbal Soup on the menu list. She hardly drink soup and this is one of the very few soups that she loves. LOL.

7 Treasure Herbal Soup RM20.90

We first thought that it was quite pricey for a meal of just soup plus rice/noodles but as food arrived, we realized we were totally wrong. Portion given was so generous, with plenty of ingredients to dig in – pork slices, vegetables, eggs, tofu brimming in Summergirl’s 7 Treasure soup.

Honey Dates ABC Soup RM19.90

Most importantly, the laborious effort to boil the soup for 15 hours, gathering essence and flavours of red dates, goji berries, yu zhu, dang sheng, soy beans, barley, pork bones to result in flavourful, yet not oily broth. So nourishing, tummy warming. We drank it directly from the large bowl instead of scooping spoonful by spoonful, like how we did at home. Haha. Do try this way. It is more satisfying.

Visited for a second time last week and had a try on different dishes on Alison Food House menu. Spicy Drunken Pork, served with brown rice bee hoon for carb base. RM19.90 for such a big portion, ingredients loaded. Summergirl could barely finish half, enough to feed two small female eaters.

Spicy Drunken Pork RM19.90

Noodles immersed in vibrant orange broth, topped with egg, vegetable, tofu, raddish, pork slices. Toppings may vary, with alfafa, mushroom minced pork, vegetable and egg given. Very spicy soup, but we do enjoy the fiery hot aftertaste but for those who can’t take spicy, take it considerably. Staff gave us a lime too and said that if it is too spicy, give few squeezes of it to the soup to tone down the spiciness, balance up the overall taste with sour zing.

Sze Chuan Pickled Cucumber

Soup taking the limelight but side dishes here are not shadowed too. From signature Sze Chuan Pickled Cucumber, 5 Spice Pork Belly 100g (RM12), Crackled Roast Pork 100g (RM18), weekend special like Roast Siew Yuk, Hainanese Chicken, Pork Belly Skewer and more are all worth a try.

Hainanese Chicken RM16

Not your usual Hainanese Chicken, our favourite and recommended. Tender, juicy free-range chicken meat with smooth chicken skin. What makes it different would be the small amount of sesame, flavouring up the chicken in a unique way. Add a bowl of rice you can make it a comfort meal.

Homemade Pork Belly Satay RM16

Marinated rolled pork belly skewers served with homemade satay style gravy concocted from peanuts and 8 different spices. Chunky, mildly spicy and appetizing. Healthier meat option too, as Alison Soup House using grain fed, antibiotic free pork meat.

Not everyone is blessed with having family staying around, pampered by delicious homecooked food and soup everyday. When you miss your mum’s home-cooked soup and options from most eateries either filled with MSG, leaving you feeling thirsty afterwards; or pale in taste, doesn’t live up to your expectation – don’t be disappointed, visit Alison Soup House for a bowl of MSG free soup that warms the soul.
